Christian F. Wathen, MD, FACP

Dr. Christian Wathen is a Board-Certified Internist and an ACP Fellow. Dr. Wathen graduated with high honors with a dual undergraduate degree in Pre-Professional and Molecular Biology from Florida Institute of Technology. She received her medical degree from East Tennessee State University and completed her residency at Christiana Care Health Services in Wilmington, Delaware. After residency, she worked as a hospitalist at Christiana Care Hospital and was the Medical Director for VITAS Hospice. In 2007, Dr. Wathen left Delaware and began working for Riverside Medical Group as an outpatient Internal Medicine physician in Deltaville, later transitioning to Mathews, VA.

Dr. Wathen has been married to her husband for 28 years and they have 3 children. Dr. Wathen has a very long family history with Mathews County Virginia. Her family has lived in Mathews County since the 1700s. In fact, her great grandmother and grandmother were born on the same property that Dr. Wathen currently resides. Some of her earliest childhood memories were crabbing in the Piankatank River with her great, great Aunt Pauline Simmons. To date, many of her immediate and extended family reside in Mathews County.

Dr. Wathen attends Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Mathews County. She and her family have served there since 2007. Currently, Dr. Wathen is teaching Sunday school to the 11-14 year old children. Her faith is very important to her and this is one of her greatest comforts and strengths.

Kimberly Burnett, FNP-BC

Kim grew up on a farm in a small rural town in Upstate New York. Instilled as a youngster was the importance of faith, family, friendship, and hard work. Graduating with honors from Binghamton University in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and returned after graduating in 2008 as a nurse practitioner. She is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with now 27 years of experience in healthcare, working in both hospital-based and outpatient settings. She has a special interest in adult and chronic illness management. “Helping people find and maintain their best state of wellness I have found to be my passion. I strive to know my patients on a personal level because every person is unique and on their own journey in life.”

Kim has been married to her husband Mark for 25 years and they have 1 daughter. As a family, they enjoy spending time with their dogs and trail riding with their horses. Since relocating to Charles City, Virginia during the pandemic, learning about the traditions of fox hunting has become a new hobby. Other lifelong interests include bowling and helping coach youth bowlers as well as singing in the church choir.

Working in Mathews has reminded her of her small-town roots and the blessings associated with being a part of a rural community.

Access to Physician

We are focused on the quality care you need while enjoying more quality time with your physician. We will provide same day and next day appointment slots to help you avoid expensive ER and Urgent Care visits. New patient and routine follow up appointments will be appropriately scheduled to allow for this benefit.

Office Environment

Our goal is when a patient enters our office; there will be a sense of peace and competency. Staff will be trained to be friendly and accommodating to the patient’s needs. Going to the doctor’s office will never be fun, but our goal is that it will be a pleasant experience at MPMC, Inc. Our staff will be trained to respond to our patients’ needs promptly and pleasantly, whether by phone or in person. Our desire is that patients may actually look forward to their appointments.

MPMC Inc provides a secure method for communicating PHI (Protected Health Information) electronically to our clients.

Why the need for MPMC?

For the past decade, traditional healthcare out-patient practices see from 25-35 patients per provider per day. Each provider has anywhere from 1,800 to 3,000 patients that they care for. The consequence of this type of high volume practice tends to be shortened office visits, spending more time in the waiting room rather than seeing your doctor, lack of accessibility and the growing feeling of patients of being seen but not heard. At Middle Peninsula Medical, we are limiting our practice to around 900 patients. We believe doing this will give us the chance to provide unprecedented accessibility to the physician and the practice.

Our practice will be centered on serving the patient. We will not rely solely on third party insurance payers such as Medicare. Our modest monthly fee for non-covered medical services allows us to meet or exceed our patient’s expectations.
